South Korea 2 - 0 Greece
My boys did 'em good in this one. South Korea opened the World Cup looking like it wanted to repeat its 2002 run to the semifinals. Ki Sung-Yueng curled in a free kick from near the left corner flag in the seventh minute and Lee Jung-Soo, the central defender tapped it into an unguarded net. Park Ji-sung, of Manchester United, doubled the lead in the 52nd with a slick solo goal. He intercepted a misplaced pass from Vasilis Torosidis and skipped past two defenders before slipping a shot beyond the Greek goalkeeper. Awesome game for South Korea.
Argentina 1 - 0 Nigeria
Gabriel Heinze scored on a diving header in the sixth minute, when he powered in a shot from 12 yards off Juan Sebastian Veron's corner kick. Argentina managed to hold the score for the remaining 84 minutes. The Nigerians had a clear height advantage, but struggled for much of the match to contain Argentina forward Lionel Messi. Nigeria gained momentum and confidence in the second half, as Taye Taiwo came within inches of an equalizer with a low shot that flew just past Sergio Romero's left post, and substitute Kalu Uche scooped a weak shot over the crossbar from inside the box with eight minutes left. It was a decent game, but too many opportunities missed.
United States 1 - 1 England
Welp, the US soccer team got away with quite a lucky result. England's Steven Gerrard scored a goal after a sneaky run and a triangle of quick passes with an eventual through ball that lead to the perfectly placed shot beyond Tim Howard. The goal came only 3 and a half minutes into the game, and worried US fans and players alike. Clint Dempsey would manage to get a strike from outside the 18 which England's goalkeeper, Greene, botched the save. What should've been a routine stop by the keeper, would somehow bounce of his gloves, over to his right, and roll slowly into the goal while he crawled to try and prevent it. The US would survive the second half and I'm sure they're glad to take the point for a tie. USA. USA. USA.
