OLYMPIA, Wash.
Should the state tax beer to balance the budget?
It's the newest idea to come out of Olympia as
lawmakers try to break a deadlock on a tax package
and end a special session.
"We're trying to raise $800 million in revenue,"
said Senate Democratic Caucus Leader Ed Murray.
"Education is the main thing we do, and that's what
we're trying to fund. Beer is not one of the
necessities of life, and it's a choice and I say
that as someone who enjoys beer."
The proposal would tax brewers and distributors 50
cents on the gallon. That could mean a surcharge of
.25 to .50 cents on an average six-pack at your local
convenience store. Murray says microbreweries,
including Red Hook and Pyramid, would be exempt from
the tax plan.

AT LEAST THERE'S NO TAX ON MICROS, THEY'RE EXPENSIVE
AS HELL TO BEGIN WITH. ITS NOT TOO BAD OF AN IDEA TOUGH,
AS RESIDENTS OF WASHINGTON, WE PAY NO INCOME TAX.
WE DO HAVE PLENTY OF OTHER BIG ONES THOUGH. JUST
ADDING ONE MORE CAN'T HURT CAN IT?
